The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
