The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
